There is something in the movie In America, a subliminal message, perhaps, or some sort of trigger, that connects the movie directly with my tear ducts. Siobhan was watching the movie when I got home from my sister-in-law's house, and within about 30 seconds, I was sobbing like a baby. I've seen the movie 4 times, and the same thing happens every time.

The movie does have an undeniable power all its own. But in this particular case, it may get a bit of an added boost. This boost could come from what is possibly more than a passing resemblance existing between the two daughters in the movie and two daughters in the real world. And - who knows? - there might be other parallels, as well. Such as, I don't know, a shared Irish-American experience, the rebirth of a family which can happen when a new member arrives, and the very real power of our wishes to shape our lives. But there also is no denying the value of the "wise child," whose fresh innocence keeps her in touch with the real magic hiding somewhere out there in the world. The child who knows, while feeling both the thrill of joy and the tingle of dread, that you should always be careful what you wish for.
